Jack è un giocatore senza volto conosciuto come The Joker. Si guadagna da vivere giocando ai videogiochi e usando la sua voce roca per dare vita alle fantasie delle persone. Quando il miglior sito di giochi della costa occidentale manda qualcuno a intervistarlo, Quinlan entra con i suoi riccioli ramati e le curve spesse, e sono immediatamente attratti l'uno dall'altra. Quinlan non ha idea del mostro che si nasconde sotto la superficie del suo atteggiamento calmo. Jack è come left sabbie mobili, che la trascinano nel ventre oscuro dei suoi desideri. Per uscirne illesa, dovrà cedere alla fame che ha sempre cercato di negare.

Quinlan è una giornalista presso The Lead, una rivista online dedicata al gaming. Quando le è stato incaricato il ruolo di intervistare un famoso giocatore avvolto in mistero, si è buttata ad occhi chiusi: non ha fatto ricerche né preparato scalette per facilitare il suo lavoro. Ha preferito essere semplicemente se stessa. Cordiale, istintiva, armata di schiettezza e il suo miglior sorriso, pensava di essere pronta per fare la conoscenza di Joker. Di certo non immaginava di trovarsi davanti un uomo dallo sguardo affascinante, dotato di una voce sensuale e un magnetismo irresistibile. 

Quello che doveva essere un incontro di lavoro presto prenderà una piega diversa. Quinlan diventa sempre più curiosa di conoscere la persona che si nasconde dietro la maschera ma non più nelle vesti da reporter. Tra i due l'attrazione è palpabile e la semplice intervista si trasforma in un gioco fatto  d'intesa, parole sussurrate, lussuria. 

Joker è disposto a mostrarle chi si nasconde dietro l'immagine che l'ha consacrato, a patto di passare la notte insieme a lui e stare alle sue regole. Un'unica occasione. Prendere o lasciare. Cosa potrà mai andare storto?

Questa è la prima opera che leggo dell'autrice e devo dire che mi ha decisamente conquistata. L'ho letta d'un fiato ma allo stesso tempo avrei voluto che non finisse mai. Quin e Jack sono due personaggi che hanno tanto da regalare: scene spicy a volontà, ma anche tenerezza, momenti divertenti e un pizzico di violenza. Ognuno ha le proprie insicurezze, le proprie imperfezioni, ed è questo aspetto che ha reso la storia a mio avviso ancora più perfetta. Li ho amati entrambi, cosa non da poco. Impossibile non cadere nella trappola di Jack quando mostra il suo lato più umano, anche perché la narrazione viene raccontata dal suo POV. Mentre Quin? Sicuramente non è la solita donna debole e paurosa che troviamo di solito in questo genere. 

Non vedo l'ora di conoscere gli altri protagonisti della serie, che promette molto bene.

Quinlan is a journalist at “The Lead”, an online gaming magazine. When she’s asked to interview one of the most famous players shrouded in mystery, she dives herself into it with no hesitation: she doesn’t do any research nor plan a set of questions to ease the burden. She rather simply be herself, just as friendly and instinctive of a lady that she is, armed with admiring straightforwardness.

The day comes and with her best smile, she thinks she is ready to face the Joker. She certainly does not imagine that she is about to meet a fascinating man, with a sensual voice and an irresistible magnetism: 

What was supposed to be a business meeting soon took a different turn. Quinlan becomes more and more intrigued to know the person in front of her, but no longer in the role of reporter. Due to the strong attraction between the two, the interview turns into a game of playful glances, whispered words and lust.

Joker is willing to open up to her and show his real self, putting aside the image that he has built up over the years, but as long as she spends the night with him and sticks to his rules. Just one offer: Take it or leave it. 

Well... why not? What could ever go wrong?

This is the first novel I read by the author and I must say that it definitely got me hooked. I read it in one sitting and as I got closer to the last chapters I kept on hoping it never ended. Quin and Jack have a lot to offer: spicy scenes, but also tenderness, funny moments and a good amount of passionate love. Each of them have their own insecurities, their own imperfections, and this made the story even more unique. I loved them both! 

I find it impossible to not fall into Jack's trap when he shows his human side.

And as for Quin? She is certainly far from being the usual weak and fearful woman we usually find in this genre. I can't wait to get to know the other hoeros of this very promising series.
